Every week, I organize 400 to 700 links into roughly 60 categories as part of my ongoing effort to learn about AI. This is my personal notebook, which I enjoy sharing with friends… a hobby and a labor of love, rather than a commercial publication or product.
If you arrived here through a search or shared link, this page collects the links I found for Open Source for the week ending September 4, 2026.
As part of my learning process, I like to automate the category covers. It gives me a chance to learn Python and APIs.
This week’s cover prompt was written using Claude Opus 4.7, and the image was generated using Nano Banana 2.1.
Category Cover Image Prompt: A psychedelic screen-printed gig poster of many mismatched hands circled around a crackling campfire passing a glowing ember shaped like a code bracket, sparks spiraling upward into swirling op-art smoke that branches into git-tree limbs and falling autumn leaves, bold hand-lettered title 'Open Source' arcing cleanly across the top smoke plume, electric magenta, acid orange, deep teal and lime green ink on cream paper with visible registration offset and ornate decorative border, flat 1960s Fillmore-era jam-band poster style.
This Week in Open Source News
Summary by Claude Sonnet 5.5 based on this week’s links:
- NVIDIA to acquire Hugging Face: NVIDIA announced a $12.93B deal to buy Hugging Face, with Jensen Huang and Clement Delangue both framing it as good for open models. NVIDIA and Michael Dell said Hugging Face will stay open and work on any silicon.
- GLM-5.3 weights open up: Z.ai released GLM-5.3 as open weights (744B total, 40B active, 1M context), with day-0 vLLM support. Unsloth then shrank it to a 2-bit version that runs on a 256GB Mac, and Databricks reported 310 tok/s serving it.
- The Hugging Face incident shapes the safety debate: Many posts debated the OpenAI and Hugging Face attack by AI agents. Dwarkesh argued it could be an argument for open source, while Ethan Mollick said open-weight releases need model cards and red teaming, since guardrails can be broken on any open model.
This summary was generated by Claude Sonnet 5.5 to help you explore the links below. Rest assured, I select, organize, and check the links by hand in Google Sheets, and write the introduction and personal commentary in The Main Newsletters myself each week as a labor of love.

Quick ethics take: A big part of why I joined @huggingface 5 years ago was the commitment to *critical* AI values: Openness, transparency, shared access. And we scaled this across the globe. Today, we’ve agreed to join NVIDIA… grounded on those values. I’ll share more later. =)

Marin 535B-A23B is 13% through training. This hero run would not be possible without the generous support of the Jen-Hsun and Lori Huang Foundation, which provided the funding for the compute (Coreweave). Thanks @JensenHuang for supporting open models!

In 2017, the team who submitted the Transformer architecture was hoping for “hundreds of citations” 281,654 citations later, people are pointing to that paper as the catalyst for the next era of an industrial revolution. In @aidangomez’s words, it was a ‘productive 4 months’:

The independent review of the OpenAI Hugging Face incident, supposedly a watershed moment in cybersecurity, wasn’t done by a cybersecurity firm and the authors have no cybersecurity experience. That’s bad. Here’s my new video.

i can’t stop checking in on this. the marin team is training the largest fully open model ever. 535B params (23B active), 18T tokens. nobody has been this transparent in a hero run before. beyond the weights, the data, logs, and decisions are all open. you can, and should, follow

Massive milestone for open AI research: Open Athena just kicked off training on a 535B parameter (23B active) MoE model (Marin) across 18T tokens. It’s completely open. Every code pipeline, training log, and checkpoint is out there for researchers to inspect and learn from.

update on this: fine-tuning not worth it rn for most use-cases open-source frontier is changing too quickly. by the time your optimize a fine-tune, a new base model will be better also, as models get better at instruction following, skills are better and *way* more portable
