I’m often surprised by how much I’m ahead of the AI adoption curve—and equally caught off guard by the emotions surrounding the topic.

However, today I had a jarring experience that highlighted just how far Meta is out over their skis. I was scrolling Instagram when I encountered an interactive ad that face-swapped me into all sorts of historical scenes. It was startling. As an early adopter, even I was taken aback. So, I can only imagine how someone with a strong dislike for AI would feel. Meta seems quite comfortable pushing forward with tech like this without explicit consent.

On the flip side, the ad itself was incredibly advanced. It wasn’t just a carousel of 10 images—it was an endless scroll of me face-swapped into different scenarios, like a romance novel, a pumpkin patch scene, a vacation post, and “sweater weather.” I could change the setting dynamically within the ad. The poker tell here is that Meta can make incredible ad experiences if they choose to. So why aren’t they using this interactive creativity to enhance ad units for their clients?

Here are some examples of the screenshots I took. Has anyone else seen this?
