Today may have been my favorite bay bath of all time. This also may be the coldest water I’ll experience, and thanks to tracking lots of data over the years, I felt safe and everything went well.
The ice was pretty thick on my way into the water. It was high tide, and I had to stomp my way through the ice to get out to the slush. I enjoyed sitting in the slush because I had a shelf, and I rested my thermometer on a little iceberg. The slush was so thick that it absorbed all the waves. Usually with 14 mph winds coming at me, I would be getting hit in the face quite a bit with water, but not today.
On my way out, I inadvertently cut my shins quite a bit stomping through the ice. I was numb and couldn’t feel the resistance, and the ice shelf was pretty thick. So the irony is the only injury I got was bloody shins.
It was an incredibly beautiful and peaceful evening with a lot of buffleheads, seagulls, brant, and geese.
