The main cover image is a robot dressed to resemble Kendrick Lamar’s Super Bowl performance. The text is Times New Roman, the font from Kendrick’s album “DAMN.” Image created with Flux Pro.

The rest of the covers were created using Claude 3.5 and the Ideogram API, with the theme ‘Superbowl Halftime Show + category name.’

Executive Summaries

The top story this week is that AI is becoming the best in the world at math and coding. OpenAI and Google both performed exceptionally well at the International Olympiad, winning gold medals. OpenAI is now in the top 99th percentile in coding, with only seven American programmers ranking higher than its o3 model.

The second major story is a bit of a sleeper, but it’s incredible—Meta can now read minds with 80% accuracy using brain waves.

The third major topic comes from a blog post by Sam Altman at OpenAI, where he highlights that the cost of AI is dropping 10x every 12 months, outpacing Moore’s Law. Even more incredibly, GPT-4’s cost per token dropped 150x in just one year. Altman warns that this rapid decline in cost is accelerating AI adoption and there will speed up disruption as well. It’s quite a blog post.

In an on-brand pesky move, Elon Musk has offered $96 billion to acquire OpenAI. Most people don’t see this as a serious bid but rather an attempt to force OpenAI to disclose confidential information. Sam Altman responded by declining the offer but jokingly suggested that he’d be willing to buy Twitter for $9 billion.

After five months of silence, Ilya Sutskever’s company, Safe Superintelligence, is finally back in the news as he seeks a $20 billion valuation. Ilya is widely regarded as one of the most brilliant minds in artificial intelligence.

Meanwhile, Apple released a research paper detailing new methods for making robots behave more human-like, a bit of a curveball and a sign that embodied robotics is on everybody’s minds.

In a significant shift, Google removed the “no weapons” clause from its AI principles, mirroring a similar move by OpenAI a few months ago. As AI companies deepen their ties with the U.S. government and national security interests, you see changes in policies and tone.

Elon Musk’s DOGE team is developing a custom chatbot for integration into their government efficiency efforts.

Finally, in the visuals section, I have to suggest that everyone check out Meta’s new video model. It’s really jarring.  In fact, here’s a link.

OpenAI’s Code Model Wins Gold and Ranks Among World’s Elite Programmers
OpenAI’s o3 model won a gold medal at the 2024 International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI) and reached the 99.8th percentile on Codeforces, placing it among the world’s top competitive programmers. Only seven American programmers currently rank higher than o3. The model outperformed its predecessor o1, demonstrating that general-purpose AI reasoning can match and exceed carefully crafted specialized systems in complex programming tasks.

AI can now compete with the most elite human programmers in competitive coding. o3 won gold in the International Olympiad in Informatics, beating a specialized version of o1 designed for the contest. General-purpose reasoning done by big LLMs now beats hand-crafted strategies. https://x.com/emollick/status/1889775905435771145

Meta’s AI System Decodes Brain Signals into Written Language
Meta researchers have achieved 80% accuracy in converting brain signals into written text using non-invasive recording methods. Working with the Basque Center on Cognition, Brain and Language, the team recorded brain activity from 35 volunteers while they typed sentences, using magnetic (MEG) and electrical (EEG) sensors. The technology could help people who have lost the ability to speak, though challenges remain with accuracy and the need for specialized equipment. Meta also donated $2.2 million to the Rothschild Foundation Hospital to advance this research.

Sam Altman Warns of Rapid Industry Growth and Cultural Change as AI Costs Plummet
In a powerful blog post, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman highlights that computing costs are dropping 10x every 12 months – far outpacing Moore’s Law. Altman points out that GPT-4’s cost per token fell 150x between early 2023 and mid-2024. He predicts this acceleration will lead to widespread AI adoption across industries, comparing AI’s economic impact to transistors. Looking ahead, Altman suggests AI agents are coming quickly and will function like virtual coworkers, with software engineering being an early focus [point in hand, see top-story above].  He warns of challenges in wealth distribution and disruption to labor markets, and closes by emphasizing the importance of making AI capabilities accessible to everyone.  That’s relaxing. Thanks Sam.

Three Observations – Sam Altman
The intelligence of an AI model roughly equals the log of the resources used to train and run it. The socioeconomic value of linearly increasing intelligence is super-exponential in nature. The cost to use a given level of AI falls about 10x every 12 months, and lower prices lead to much more use. https://blog.samaltman.com/three-observations

Elon Musk Offers $97B to Acquire OpenAI In Attempt To Troll and Learn Secrets
Elon Musk’s x.AI and investors offered $97.4 billion to acquire OpenAI, setting a May 2025 deadline. CEO Sam Altman dismissed the bid, calling it a competitive tactic as OpenAI works to convert from nonprofit status. The all-cash offer requires full access to OpenAI’s records and staff interviews, raising concerns about competitor access to sensitive information. OpenAI’s board chair Bret Taylor stated the organization isn’t for sale, emphasizing their mission to ensure AI benefits humanity. Musk’s team says they’ll withdraw the offer if OpenAI remains a nonprofit, suggesting the bid aims to influence the company’s planned restructuring rather than complete an acquisition.

He’s Back! – Ilya Sutskever’s Startup Safe Superintelligence in Talks for $20 Billion Valuation
Context: I haven’t posted about this company since Sept 6, 2024.
OpenAI co-founder Ilya Sutskever’s startup Safe Superintelligence (SSI) is in talks for funding that would value it at $20 billion – four times its September valuation. While SSI has yet to generate revenue, investors are drawn to Sutskever’s track record and his focus on safety.

Apple Develops System to Make Robots’ Gestures More Human-Like
Apple researchers developed EMOTION, a system that helps robots produce natural gestures and body language during interactions with humans. The framework uses AI language models to interpret social situations and generate appropriate movements, which are then refined through human feedback. In testing, the system’s gestures matched or exceeded the naturalness of human-operated robots in certain scenarios.
